5 Books You Should Read This Summer

Happy June! Summer is just around the corner which means it’s time to find more books to read. For everyone who is in school right now, I hope you are having a good end of the school year! Here is a list of books that I have enjoyed these past couple of months:

1. Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Devastated after losing her father, Camino Rios wonders if she’ll ever be the same again. She struggles to accept the truth, and everything changes when someone new enters her world: a sister. This is a sister who her father never thought to tell her about or even hint that she was alive. She’s a sister who her father left to spend time with whenever he wasn’t at home. Camino can’t help but be mad at her sister even though her name is Yahaira which means “to shine.” While Camino lives in a poor barrio in the Dominican Republic, her sister is enjoying the five hundred thousand dollars that their father left for her and her mother. However, once she meets Yahaira she realizes that she is the nice sister Camino has always wanted. This is a story of sisterhood and following your dream. Well-written and captivating, this novel will show you how love can help you overcome grief.

2. Skyhunter by Marie Lu

If you love books filled with action and adventure, you will definitely enjoy Skyhunter. When Talin was eight years old, her beloved birthplace of Basea was destroyed by the Karensa Federation. Now, Talin lives in Mara, one of the last free nations in the world, and is part of Mara’s elite fighting force called the Strikers. This book is filled with horrible monsters called Ghosts, strong friendships, and a surprise betrayal. Read Skyhunter before its sequel, Steelstriker, comes out in September!

"We aren't trusted here--not because of who we are, but where we come from" - Marie Lu, Skyhunter

3. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston

This book is basically a Hallmark movie transformed into a book. After going through an unexpected breakup that ruined her holiday plans, Sophie is devastated. However, her grandma who has been known to meddle in the lives of others has a solution. Along with nine additional members of Sophie’s extended family, her grandma organizes ten blind dates. Each family member has a designated day where they can set Sophie with the boy (and the date) of their choosing. As you can probably imagine, some dates definitely did not go as planned.

4. How to Build a Heart by Maria Padian

This book is about a sixteen-year-old girl named Izzy who is struggling to fit in. To everyone else, she seems like a normal teenager; however, the only reason she goes to a private school is because she got a scholarship, and her family is building a house through the Habitat for Humanity program. As her love life starts to overlap with her protected secret, Izzy fights to have a home and the community of friends she has always longed for. I would recommend How to Build a Heart to anyone who likes books about overcoming challenges.

5. Stronger Than You Know Jolene Perry

Joy is trying to forget about her old life. Back when she lived with her mother, she was abused and confined to a tiny trailer. Now, she is living with her aunt and uncle in a nice house and is even starting to make new friends. Just when she was starting to get back to her new normal, Joy is forced to testify at her mother’s trial. As if her distrust of new people and panic attacks weren’t enough, she now has to relive her past. Stronger Than You Know is a book that will make you laugh, cry, and celebrate every small victory Joy has as she recovers from her terrible past.
